History and VisionHow the seeds were sownTreeProject began in 1988 when two friends recognised their mutual concerns for the environment and their desire to do something about it. In deciding what action they could take the discussion kept returning to one thing - trees. Why? Trees have been a symbol of life for thousands of years; propagating and planting them allows us to tackle many of today's environmental problems. The commitment of these two people inspired their friends, who joined them and formed TreeProject. The group's first planting in April 1989 was an outstanding success, with 5000 trees and shrubs planted by over 600 volunteers. Many other urban plantings followed, with over 80,000 local indigenous trees being planted in the first five years. In 1991 TreeProject set up a major program to tackle soil degradation in country Victoria - our most serious environmental problem. Modelled on a successful program in South Australia, the 'Re-Tree Scheme' organises city volunteers to grow trees for country landholders. TreeProject has now been actively improving the environment for 13 years, planting over 1.4 million native trees, shrubs and grasses throughout urban and rural Victoria. All this has been achieved in a spirit of cooperation. We invite you to help keep that spirit growing. How the seeds keep growing and growing.Despite the current drought, TreeProject volunteers are growing approximately 130,000 seedlings that will be planted throughout Autumn and Spring this year. Each year TreeProject aims to reach out further to landholders and farmers, spreading the word of how TreeProject volunteers can help in the growing and planting of seedlings on their property. Over the next five years we are working towards growing one million seedlings each year to combat environmental degradation throughout Victoria. Help us reach our goal by getting involved in growing, planting or spreading the word! |
