Do you have leaves that look like this?
Something has been Chewing it

This may have been the culprit (sorry about the focus but I had squashed it before I downloaded the pic)
Grub at work

There are smaller culprits

Caterpillars - watch your seedlings for signs that include chewed leaves or bare stems, and leaves rolled up forming a cocoon for the caterpillar. You will need to act quickly and
thoroughly, as caterpillars can be very destructive. Check daily and remove them by hand. In severe cases, use ‘Dipel’ (available at garden centres) or garlic spray.

Cutworms - these brownish grubs live in the soil and gnaw off established seedlings just above ground level AT NIGHT. (Another good reason for keeping garden soil away from potting mix!) ‘Pyrethrum’ watered into the soil kills them, or you can check at night with a torch and collect them – you may see their tunnels into the potting mix. Note: cutworms affect the more established seedlings, so do not confuse it with ‘damping off’, which affects the younger, newly germinated plants.)

If you have any other problems, or have any questions about propagating you seedlings, please contact your area coordinator. Remember – be vigilant!
