Growing Space   Benches> Watering systemsJobs to do at different stages>
Space you need and Sunshine hours (position position position).
While the only space you need is several square metres it needs to be in a good position, and may need to change location depending on what stage of growth the seedlings are at, and what the weather is like.

For the first 4-6 weeks of seedling germination, in hot summer months of December through February your tubes should be placed in a position where they will get morning sun and be shaded from the long hot afternoon sun - or be in a position where they will get a few hours of afternoon sun and are shaded the rest of the day. If the only position you have available is full day sun, shade cloth can be used to shelter the fragile young seedlings. Once the seedligs are at the leaf stage, they need to be placed in full sun for hardening off.

The seeds need to be kept moist and warm to get the process going. If they are getting too much sunlight (getting to large for the tubes) they may need to be placed in a more shaded area, or alternativly they may need to be given a spot with more sunlight(if they are too spindly), or to be placed against a north facing warm brick wall to give warmth in cold winter months. For growing in the months prone to very hot days, a temporary shade may be required.

The angle of the suns movement changes as the seasons pass. Areas that get good sunlight for the summer months growing season may be inadequate for growing in the the autumn and winter months.

Sun Positions

We get a lot more hours of sunshine at the height of summer than we do in winter, no wonder the trees do not grow as well then.
Similarly during winter where the sun is at a much lower elevation there is a greater chance of your seedlings being shaded by objects that would not cause any problems during summer.
